Apart from
history, there is also the nature: Sfakia is dry and mountainous.
You might want a change of scenery and drive "over the
mountains" where the region of Apokoronas is situated.
It is one of the greenest regions of Crete, with a lot of
quiet villages and a few nice beaches.
A little further
on, near Giorgioupoli, you could go an see the lake of Kournas.
The only sweet water lake in Crete, it is set against a backdrop
of steep hills and mountains more reminiscent of Switzerland
than Crete.
And there
is of course the possibility of walking through the gorge
of Samaria, famous for its spectacular beauty and because
it is the longest gorge in Europe (16 km). This is quite easily
done in a day from Sfakia, either using the services of a
local tour operator or sharing a taxi to Omalos, then taking
the boat from Agia Roumeli back to Sfakia in the evening.
